WHAT IS COUNTERCURRENT CHROMATOGRAPHY?

Countercurrent Chromatography (CCC) is a form of liquid-liquid partition chromatography in which the stationary phase is a support-free liquid [1].

The name countercurrent chromatography encompasses a series of continuous liquid-liquid partition techniques such as high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) and centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC), among others.

The solvent systems used are biphasic and all CCC techniques use suitable column configurations as the content of the column are the two immiscible phases (the liquid mobile and the liquid stationary phases). Centrifugal forces are used in modern CCC equipments in order to maintain the liquid stationary phase inside the column as the liquid mobile phase passes through it [1-3].

These techniques can be used in a variety of research fields (in the separation and purification of natural products, inorganic elements, dyes, pharmaceutical drugs, agrochemicals, synthetic products, amino acids, peptides, etc.) and range from analytical to preparative (from grams to kilograms) [3-5]. CCC technique is particularly useful in the separation of polar compounds but non-aqueous solvent systems can be applied for the purification of non polar compounds.

ABOUT DVD

In 2009, financed by the local financial agency of the State of Rio de Janeiro, FAPERJ (Carlos Chagas Filho Research Foundation) we started the project of the DVD HISTORY, THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNTERCURRENT CHROMATOGRAPHY: learning step by step. In 2012, the conclusion of the project was made possible with an additional budget from the same financial agency.

The classes composing this DVD were registered during the one-week course Countercurrent Chromatography – Theory and Applications in the Chemistry of Natural Products and I Workshop on CCC, which took place at the Natural Products Research Institute at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in December 2009. Invited professors include: Prof. Alain Berthod, Université Claude Bernard, Lyon, France; Prof. Ian Garrard, Brunel University, UK, Prof. Walter Conway, New York State University at Buffalo, USA and Dr. Ying Ma, NIH, USA.

The DVD can be viewed by non Portuguese speakers as all the videos have subtitles in English. The videos also have subtitles in Portuguese so that Brazilian students and other Portuguese speaking fellows can clearly understand the classes given in English.
